The Same but Different
Two approaches to philosophize, they do the same but are different. Critical thinking is the ability to see differences and similarities. This you can experience and learn during the seminar The Same but Different.
In the Netherlands, the Socratic Method is a well-known approach to philosophical dialogue. During this seminar you will be introduced to two further methods to philosophical dialogue that have shown their strength worldwide, but are rather unknown in The Netherlands.
The ‘CoPI-method’, developed by the Scottish Catherine McCall, has evolved during the last 30 years and became world famous through the BBC-documentary Socrates for Six Year Olds. The approach follows a very strict structure to develop a ‘Community of Philosophical Inquiry’. To discover the development in your own thinking and the thinking in the group, a series of one-hour sessions is needed. These sessions will be chaired by Ed Weijers.
‘Critical thinking‘ or ‘The Art of Questioning’ is the method of Oscar Brenifier. It is famous and notorious. Also because of its strictness. Stimulating, provocative, confronting and mirroring if needed. ‘Relax …I’m your friend’, Oscar says regularly to his participants. In different sessions and workshops Oscar Brenifier will do philosophical inquiries and exercises.
This is a very rare opportunity to experience and explore these methods. During five days, Ed Weijers and Oscar Brenifier will work with the participants to show them the richness and beauty of these exciting approaches to critical thinking.
The seminar will start Wednesday 26 October 2016 at 10 o’clock and finishes Sunday 31 October at 16.30 o’clock.
Wednesday and Thursday Ed will do the CoPI sessions.
Friday, Saturday morning and Sunday Oscar will do his critical thinking sessions.
Saturday afternoon, 30 October, Oscar will introduce and show his method of doing philosophical consultations.
Saturday evening, 30 October, there is a meta-talk about the two methods with participants and Oscar and Ed.
The seminar is open for everybody who is interested in different methods of making people philosophize (with or without experience).
Working language: English
Oscar Brenifier runs his own Institut de Practiques Philosophiques. Every year he organises a Summer Seminar in a small village in Bourgogne where about 45 people from all over the world come to philosophize for 7 days. For several years, Ed Weijers chaired CoPI-sessions during these seminars. Oscar conducts workshops and seminars in many countries across the globe, from Mexico to Moscow. His website gives several videos of group sessions and philosophical consultations.
Ed Weijers is member of the EPIC International group. They are practical philosophers who philosophize with various groups and train people in and outside of Europe. Their annual workshop moves through different European countries. Ed is coordinator of the Dutch Centre for Philosophy with Children and with Catherine McCall for years, he was an executive member of SOPHIA, the European foundation for the advancement of doing Philosophy with Children.
